Texas Entertainment: 8 New Activities to Try This Summer

Texas Entertainment:

Intro

Texas is the Lone Star State and known to be the second-largest state in the country. With that comes significant populations and an abundance of things to do. You may find yourself lying by the beach, visiting one of its many cities, or taking a hike through Natural Bridge Caverns. No matter what kind of adventure you’re seeking, Texas has something special for you.

1. Theme Parks

Who doesn’t love a good theme park? If you’re into roller coasters, Six Flags in Fiesta may be the spot for you. Summers can be hot and standing in line is less than ideal. Those mister fans can only do so much. If that doesn’t sound up your alley, what about a water park?

The Schlitterbahn Parks in Galveston or New Braunfels will cool you down and you can seek out some thrills! These parks have uphill coasters, surfing pools, lazy rivers, and more. There is something for everyone to enjoy at any one of Texas’ theme parks.

2. Big Bend National Park

Find yourself leaning toward an outdoorsy adventure? Big Bend National Park borders the west side of Texas and Mexico. This park has the largest area of protected Chihuahuan Desert and takes its name from having the largest bend in the Rio Grande River.

Stargazing, scenic drives, and tours given by the rangers are just a few activities to be had at this park. With archeological sites dating back more than 10,000 years, you may just find yourself some dinosaur bones!

3. Houston Zoo

The Houston Zoo boasts over 55 acres of land with over 6,000 animals and over 600 different species. It sees over 2.1 million visitors each year. This makes summer the perfect time to go as crowds are thinner, making a tour of the park much more enjoyable and easier to view the animals.

4. Houston Space Center

Staying on the theme for Houston, but wanting something with a little more…. air conditioning? Look no further than the Houston Space Center. Fun fact, this museum has actually been affiliated with the Smithsonian since 2014. The museum is over 250, 000 square feet and holds over 400 artifacts including Apollo 12 and Mercury 9.

5. Caves

Who doesn’t love a good cave? They are few and far between and Texas holds one of the best. It gets its name by, you guessed it, the natural 60-foot limestone slab bridge that spans the amphitheater entrance to the caverns.

This bridge was created when a sinkhole collapsed below it. Located near San Antonio in the Texas Hill Country, the deepest part is 180 feet below the surface. Though, undeveloped parts may go as deep as 230 feet!

6. The Alamo

Ever heard of the Alamo, but are not really sure what it is or if it’s worth visiting? This historic Spanish fortress was founded in the 18th century by Roman Catholic missionaries in what is now San Antonio.

In 1836, it held the Battle of the Alamo where James Bowie and Davy Crockett lost their lives. Now a beautiful museum for all to be able to tour and learn more about the country’s history, it’s a must during your summer.

7. San Padre Islands and National Coast Line

Hot Texas summers call for a dip in the water. Continuing further south is the San Padre Islands and National Coast Line. The beach is only accessible by 4-wheel drive vehicles and while camping is available, it is extremely primitive.

It is the longest undeveloped barrier reef in the world and all but four miles are open to vehicle traffic. The beautiful National Seashore is 70 miles long.

8. Marijuana Use

As marijuana usage is all the buzz right now, it’s important to know the state laws when traveling across borders. Whether you’re against it or for it, just know Texas can be pretty strict when regulating use.

However, medical marijuana use is permitted and may just elevate the experience of your time in the Lone Star State! Find more information here.

Conclusion

Summers can be hot in Texas, but they’re still a great time for traveling. No matter if you’re solo traveling, have pets in the car, or visiting with family – there is something in Texas for everyone. Be sure to bring lots of water and plenty of sunscreens no matter which activities you choose.
